Gossip, first impressions, trends in the making, celebrities and style-setters. A regular feature by fashion critic Booth Moore.

I have recently taken up bike riding, in the casual, cruising around the neighborhood and occasionally down to Venice boardwalk sense. I’m crazy about my new pink Electra Hawaii beach cruiser (a gift from my husband, from the fantastic San Diego-based bike company), with hibiscus flowers on the seat. And the Nutcase helmet I got to match.

Biking is certainly hot this summer, although I’ve noticed that helmets are not. But with such stylish choices as these, what excuse do you have not to be safe? Nutcase is a Portland, Ore.-based company started five years ago by Michael Morrow, the former creative director of Nike. It sells helmets for cyclists, inline skaters, skateboarders, snowboarders, skiers etc., offering dozens of designs from $40 to $100. Besides my own Rose Hibiscus design, I also like the 8 Ball and Hula Lounge and Candy Swirl. The line on the back of the helmets says, ‘I Love My Brain.’ Nutcase is in the early stages of launching an I Love My Brain Foundation to promote head safety, and a portion of each helmet sale will go to the charity.

I bought a basket too, but I’m not entirely pleased with it aesthetically-speaking. It’s the plain white, wire variety. I would really like something more colorful but haven’t found it yet. If you have any suggestions, let me know!
