Seen on Screen: Brooks Bros. cuts custom camo suit for Colbert’s Iraq visit

‘The Colbert Report’ USO tour, which starts its televised week-long run tonight, has been dubbed ‘Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando,’ and while we may never know what (if anything) comedian Stephen Colbert is wearing down below while he entertains the troops this week, we just found out that on the outside he’s kitted out in custom camo uniform from Brooks Brothers.

According to the folks at Brooks, the label (often worn by Colbert) designed a one-of-a-kind, made-to-measure camouflage-patterned suit based on its Madison style suit in ‘Army digicamo” material. The jacket’s body is lined in tan, its sleeves are lined with a cream-and-green-striped fabric, and it’s paired with coordinating flat-front trousers.

Though Brooks’ parent company is owned by Italian businessman Claudio del Vecchio (who has ramped up the quality of the offerings considerably since acquiring it from Marks and Spencer plc in 2001), the company made sure to point out these particular garments were manufactured at the company’s Southwick suit factory in Haverhill, Mass.

Although it may be a first foray into military wear for Colbert, it’s apparently not so new to Brooks Brothers, which claims to have manufactured military uniforms as far back as the Mexican War. Also, Civil War Gens. Grant, Sheridan, Hooker and Sherman outfitted themselves at the brand’s ’s New York City store.

As far as I can see, the only thing that could make the outfit any more patriotic would be a pair of these star-spangled boots from the inaugural Florsheim by Duckie Brown collection.
