Confederacy's sole control: Duckie Brown/Florsheim exclusive 'til August

May 29, 2009 |  3:34 pm

Rage_duckieFlorsheim1

The Florsheim by Duckie Brown men's footwear collaboration has been on our radar for more than a year and a half now -- ever since models hit the runway at New York fashion week in September 2007, and the the idea of mashing up the staid, old school shoe brand with the contemporary, sometimes edgy aesthetic and quirky sense of  humor of Duckie duo Daniel Silver and Steven Cox has had me chomping at the bit.

Store news: Victoria's Secret gets the Hurley bikini

May 29, 2009 | 11:11 am

Bar Refaeli bikini hurley black bikini victoria's secret Just as the perfect little black dress can be pulled out occasion after occasion, a classic black bikini has the potential to be a timeless wardrobe staple. But as many a woman has discovered, in the world of swimwear, that "perfect" suit can be hard to find, even if you're a model like Bar Refaeli, who appeared on the cover of this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Refaeli, though, didn't have to go the "Never mind -- I'll just go with a pareo" route when her search came up empty. She enlisted Costa Mesa-based swimwear maker Hurley to collaborate on the Little Black Bikini, which hits the racks at Victoria's Secret on Tuesday.

Israel-native Refaeli says she particularly likes the way this bikini travels. "I insist on packing easy, chic pieces that will work for me when I am on the go," she says. "And the fabric dries quickly, so I don't worry about throwing it into my bag to make the next flight."

The suit retails for $120, and 10% of sale proceeds benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer, an organization that promotes early detection and an active lifestyle as the keys to preventing breast cancer.

Victoria's Secret at the Grove, 189 The Grove Drive, Los Angeles. (323) 634-9177. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

FAST Fashion Show 'Unleashed'

May 28, 2009 |  9:24 pm

IMG_0830_catwalk_sm

A cocktail dress made out of Equal packets, a vest of intricately cut brown paper, a highlighter-yellow evening gown – these were just some of the threads produced when trend-setting college student designers were encouraged to shed inhibitions and design clothing for “Unleashed.”

The spring fashion show, by UCLA’s Fashion and Student Trends (FAST), benefited the nonprofit charity Food on Foot with clothing donations from attendees. The entire show – planning, fundraising, modeling, ushering and designing – was produced by UCLA students of all majors and backgrounds.

Set against energizing performances from student hip-hop groups, flashy videography on screens flanking the catwalk provided by VJ COLLABO, and electrifying techno music by DJ Lawrence Chang, the two-hour show sent models down the runway in each respective designer’s set of fashions.

Every student designer was unique from the next: washed denim crop jackets followed green-and-black zebra prints; a coral train ruffle dress with a raised front hem came after a metallic green-and-yellow plaid cutaway bathing suit. There were sailor-influenced navy sheath dresses with gold metal accents amongst boxer-inspired knee-length shorts for men, and lots of patent leather peep-toe platform pumps (seen on the runway and off).

Audience members arrived dressed to impress, with summery corals and teals, sparkly metallic and jeweled sandals and, despite the entrance into summer, a continued obsession with the plaid flannel shirt for both men and women. Male fashions flaunted styles plucked from Grandpa’s closet, but modernized: crisp vests, sweater cardigans and comfy loafers.

The student designers and models at the FAST performance threw all of their creative selves into their designs. Diana Kohan, a fourth-year history major at UCLA, has been designing “since [she] could pick up a pen.”

Her line, entitled “moi je joue” (French for “me, I play” and a famous Brigitte Bardot song), featured smart business-causal wear that is clean and tailored, with some twists: a mini skirt of red-and-white plaid, a simple white spring dress with elegant gold button accents, long silver chains and pretty bow sashes.

“Foofiness, bows and lace and satin: This is who I am,” Kohan said.

Bearded & Tschorn: Video chat with the 2009 Sideburn/Muttonchop champ

May 28, 2009 |  4:52 pm

Rage_ttot2

The day after he and his massive white sideburns won a second championship at the World Beard and Moustache Championships, Lake Tahoe, Calif., resident Toot Joslin sat down with me in Anchorage to discuss facial hair competition, the importance of costume and attitude, and why he stays away from open flames.

A swimming pool contractor by trade, Joslin narrowly missed medaling at his first attempt in Carson City, Nev., in 2003, took top honors in the Sideburns category at the 2005 Berlin games but failed to repeat the win at the 2007 Brighton games.

Bearded & Tschorn: Kiehl's offers L.A. men a shaving cream swap-out

May 28, 2009 | 12:04 pm

CloseShaversGreenEagleTube  Guys, if you're not in training for the next World Beard and Moustache Championships, and have a tube of shaving cream kicking around the bottom of your Dopp kit that you're not so keen on, here's your chance to turn it into a Kiehl's test drive.

Our sister blog California Consumer has posted the details of a limited-time offer to trade in a tube of shaving cream (at least a 4-oz. size) for a 5-oz. tube of Kiehl's.

Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream. You'll have to sit through a five-minute personal consultation with a customer representative, but it's a small price to pay -- especially if you're feeling frugal as Father's Day approaches.

The offer starts Friday and runs only through June 7, and will be limited to free-standing Kiehl's boutiques -- locally that means the Grove, Robertson Boulevard, Americana at Brand, South Coast Plaza and Montana Boulevard (in Santa Monica) locations. Get the rest of the information here.

Fashion Diary: Christian Lacroix files for bankruptcy protection

May 28, 2009 | 10:50 am

Christian_rage Gossip, first impressions, trends-in-the-making, celebrities and style setters. A regular feature by fashion critic Booth Moore.

Sad to hear the news this morning that Christian Lacroix has filed for bankruptcy protection, and just when his exuberant, puffed-up, 1980s-era designs were starting to come back into fashion, too. Marc Jacobs borrowed heavily from Lacroix's aesthetic for his fall Louis Vuitton collection, and Freida Pinto wore a Lacroix gown to the Golden Globes earlier this year. But Lacroix himself hasn't gotten much attention from the fashion world recently.
