We touted Talbots as “One to watch in 2009” back in a January issue, and now Michelle Obama dons a dress from the recently made-over line on the May cover of Essence magazine. Talbots is actually looking a lot more like J. Crew now --particularly the way its catalogs are styled, so the line is probably familiar territory to the first lady.

But it’s not just what she is wearing that is intriguing, it’s the possibility of what she could wear that has designers inspired. With the world watching to see what she’ll wear next, it’s no surprise that Michelle Obama has become a muse to many.

In his fall line, Elie Tahari has created the “Michelle” dress -- a one-shoulder cocktail dress in a vibrant orange and purple print. The dress also comes in a solid, deep plum color if the first lady isn’t feeling up to the bold print. And a large bow on the shoulder adds a quirky, feminine element that is playful and would have people talking.

A line called Rafaella has a whole collection of work wear separates inspired by the first lady. It’s more casual than what we’ve seen her wear, but more practical for day to day and more realistic for those who would like to emulate her style.

And on the beauty front, Keisha Whitaker has developed a lip gloss for her line Kissable Couture called “First Lady.” It’s a pinkish brown lip lacquer that Whitaker felt would flatter Obama’s coloring.

Whether they’re basing their creations on her frame, skin tone, height or those shoulders, she will certainly continue to inspire designer’s collections further into the fall.
