Leading actress nominee Kate Winslet was a showstopper on tonight’s Oscar red carpet, not only because of her striking Yves Saint Laurent gown, but her supremely sculpted hair. The look was part retro, part futuristic.

It seemed to be suspended -- not casually loose tendrils, but also not an uptight and uninspired chignon. It was polished, flattering and effortless looking. I spoke to Winslet’s hair stylist Renato Campora who gave her the look this evening and found out that the process is just as unfussy as the result.

“My inspiration was Grace Kelly,” says Campora. “I wanted the hair to be sleek, classy and modern and for the style to fit the neckline of the dress and create a little volume around her face.”

Campora’s steps to achieving Winslet’s Oscar hair: “I started on wet hair and worked in Frederic Fekkai All Day Density Styling Whip. I then blew-dry the hair with a round brush for smoothness, but still with volume underneath. I used a 1-inch curling iron to make waves and then let it sit for 20 minutes. I used Frederic Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Creme to brush through the hair and then rolled the hair underneath and pinned it with long bobby pins. Finally I sprayed sheer hairspray over the hair to hold it.” Love it or hate it? What do you think of Kate Winslet’s hair at tonight’s Academy Awards?
