Which Golden Globes dress will you wear? Allen Schwartz of A.B.S weighs in on his favorite looks of the evening

January 12, 2009 |  1:58 pm

What did L.A. designer Allen Schwartz think of the Golden Globes styles? “There was a tremendous amount of glamour. The stars really went for it,” says Schwartz, owner of A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz, the line that takes design cues from what celebs wear on the red carpet.

Golden Globes best dressed: Which Golden Globes dress will you wear?

I chatted with Schwartz during the red carpet pre-show about which looks he loved and what trends will best translate into his line.

Long Gowns: “The trend in dresses is definitely long gowns,” says Schwartz, who usually spies more cocktail dresses at Globes, but was pleasantly surprised to see all the length, especially on Eva Mendes’ sweeping Dior confection — his favorite star of the night. Schwartz plans to incorporate long dresses into his line, saying that they make great bridesmaid or second wedding dresses.

A neutral palette: The Moet at the dinner tables wasn’t the only champagne flowing last night. Most dresses appeared in hues of ivory, nude, soft gray, gold and champagne. Schwartz loved the neutral color of Drew Barrymore’s soft gray Dior dress and Kristin Scott Thomas' taupe Lanvin, because they are easy and wearable colors for most women.

One shoulder: “Asymmetrical is more important than ever,” Schwartz says. He especially liked Maggie Gyllenhaal’s leopard-print Lanvin dress, but would reinterpret it sans print. “The one-shoulder looks good on everybody and is great for the décolleté.”

Who doesn’t like that?

I also loved Kirsstin Scott-Thomas's dress...subtle....I did not like Eva Longoria's dress as it looked vulgar. Dimi looked nice. Angelina looked nice and not vulgar...Some of the women looked so vain and strutted their stuff...Maggie looked covered up, but the print too gaudy.

J.Lo's dress was gorgeous. She has beautiful taste and looks great after having twins.

Another dress that I really liked was Jennifer Morrison's, it showed that rusching can be done well and it was nice to see the pop of the bright blue admist all the beiges/whites/blush pinks etc that seemed to be the theme of the night.

Not everyone can pull off Maggie Gyllenhal's look; animal prints can be tricky and look cheap but Ms. Gyllenhal was the epitome of elegance;

Angelina Jolie is one of the few who can get away with minimal make-up and a simple sheath and look simply beautiful;

Now I think JLo looked vulgar; she used to be one of the best dressed in past award events.

But my favorite was Drew Barrymore -- she looked fun & glam, and her bouyant hair matched her vivacious personality: a Hollywood look for a Hollywood event...
