The top 10 style movies that left us reeling

December 19, 2008 |  5:22 pm

'The Thomas Crown Affair' Movies deliver more than style cues. The best icons -- from Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen in "The Thomas Crown Affair" to Spike Lee in "She's Gotta Have It" -- show us how to wink, walk, wear the clothes and sometimes, take them off too.

Being a slave to cinema and style, I decided to poll historians, critics, fashion designers and costume designers to amass a list of the movies with style that made us want to be identity thieves. I often ask myself, "WWFDW?" -- or "what would Faye Dunaway wear?" before I get dressed.  And you probably have your own cinematic style icon too.

See the story here. Check out the gallery and great film trivia here  and rant away below if you can't believe we didn't add one of your favorites.

I suspect that 'Road Warrior' and 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome' had a LOT to do with the epidemic of 'modern primitivism', i.e., tattooing and piercing every conceivable body part.

True style, IMO, is both very personal and universal. Trends are the self-conscious poses of people who haven't settled on an identity. What i love about style is that it transcend time and the spasms of fashion. But really: it's all about the fabric, isn't it?

... i thank the gods of style for liberating me from the sight of Diane Keaton in men's baggy clothes and the hobo hat! Diane may have sparked the look, but she also killed it.

Bonnie and Clyde, Pulp Fiction, A Man and a Woman, Shogun (TV), Out of Africa, Bladerunner, Godfather 2, Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogony, The Moderns, Breathless, The Last Emporer, Belle de Jour, Cleopatra Jones, Doctor Zhivago

Zoot Suit and American Me, brought the Pachuco look back for dozens of Latino Youngsters.

American Graffiti has to be one of my all time favorites.

I also like the look of Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront.

After watching Devil in a Blue Dress I went looking for that very same Jac-Shirt that Denzel wore as Easy Rawlins

This was not a well-researched list. Trust me, no one thinks She's Gotta Have It is a fashion film. Corcoran is so out of her depth.

Star Wars! So Prada!

I still think that Marilynn Monroe's dress twirling up in "The Seven Year Itch" is still beautiful. And Gable in GWTW when he's at the Atlanta Ball wearing the tux and dancing with Scarlett. . .oh, my! I've not seen many men wear a tux looking that good.
