Get Julie Christie's look
Congrats to Julie Christie on her Golden Globe nomination for "Away From Her." The
actress has always been a sound style icon, especially in her role as a swinging '60s glamour puss in "Darling." But it's the iconic vision of her in a Cossack hat in "Doctor Zhivago" that typically comes to mind. You can get the look -- in faux mink-- with this Russian hat at Sport Chalet, ($38). Who else, besides me, needs one for Sundance?

Personally, to really get in a Julie Christie sort of mood, I like to put on the hat and then listen to Yo La Tengo's classic "Tom Courtenay":

But maybe that's just me.

I met the august but petite Julie Christie one day on Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice CA. where she was shopping and talked to her about Kennneth Brannagh's film version of Hamlet (which I love), also her sense of personal style. She is still one of Hollywood's greatest natural actors and an iconic presence from the 60's. Self-deprecating but at the same time very much the lioness, she explained in an off-hand way that she never wore really expensive jewelry but things she'd picked up from vintage shops in London; she called this kind of costume jewelry "tat." I thought she looked absolutely super--then as always.
