Who hates the French now?

According to a story in WWD, foreigners are bolstering our weak economy with their rampant shopping here.
The article states: ‘While the sluggish economy and high gas prices may be leaving Americans feeling a bit pinched this season, overseas tourists, especially in New York, are shopping till they’re dropping, thanks to the plummeting dollar.’
I don’t know about you, but I’m jealous.

Sorority sister hell

In the NYT’s Modern Love column on Sunday, an attorney named Kally Vallen living in Piedmont, Calif., recounts her horrific betrayal by her sorority sisters. She was sexually assaulted by a frat boy and the girls blamed her. It’s like ‘Lord of the Flies’ for girls. If you ever participated in collegiate pre-fab friendship and got shafted, this is a must-read. It’s riveting even if you never joined a sorority. I didn’t. Perhaps most depressing is the chance meeting Vallen has with an ex-sister 20 years later, who acts like it was no big deal and laughs like a ninny.

A New wrinkle in time

Target anti-aging marketing gets more specific. Apparently, skin thins even more once a woman enters menopause, so Shiseido has devised a new line of creams for the hot flash set: Benefiance NutriPerfect. A special peptide blend is supposed to strengthen collagen and reduce wrinkles, which sounds similar to the claims of every other anti-aging cream. It seems to me that someone at Shiseido deserves a raise for figuring out how to market to older women when they are at their most vulnerable: fainting and seeing spots. The rollout of the new product happens in February.

Nina Garcia on what to pack

Over at Fashionista.com, Nina Garcia played A to their reader’s Qs and the results are fun and interesting. Here’s a tidbit:

What pieces do you think are essential when traveling with very limited suitcase space for an extended period of time?

Nina Garcia: ‘I think when traveling with limited space for an extended period of time you should keep to the basics -Trench coat or classic pea coat, button down shirt, cashmere cardigan, high heel and ballet flat, a pair of dark denim jeans and, of course, a little black dress. I would also include a couple of statement pieces-jewelry and other accessories-to personalize your look.’

What’s your must-pack necessity?
