Isaac Hayes, the baritone soul singer who died in 2008 at age 65, may be memorialized with a stretch of highway in his home state of Tennessee, the Associated Press reported this week.

On Thursday the state Senate unanimously passed a measure to designate a portion of Interstate 40 the ‘Isaac Hayes Memorial Highway’ after the state House approved it in April.

The proposed stretch of highway is near Memphis, where Hayes was living at the time of his death. He was raised north of the city in Tipton County.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen is not expected to oppose the bill.

Best known for his ‘Theme From Shaft,’ which won Academy and Grammy awards, Hayes was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
