Alex Chilton and the Replacements

The Replacements Alex Chilton
Uploaded by Celtiemama. - Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.

Nearly everyone knows "The Letter" by the Box Tops, sung by Alex Chilton, who died Wednesday in New Orleans at age 59, after suffering apparent heart troubles.

But many music fans think of the Minneapolis band the Replacements when they hear "Alex Chilton." Here's a video of that song (though when I want to listen to the Replacements -- or just Paul Westerberg -- I go straight to "Skyway" or maybe "Waitress in the Sky").

Times pop music critic Ann Powers has an appreciation here on the Pop and Hiss blog, and pop music writer Randy Lewis will have a full obituary later at www.latimes.com/obits.
