Remembering Hank Gathers

Gathers Loyola Marymount held a ceremony Saturday to remember its 1989-90 team, which featured Hank Gathers, the basketball star who collapsed during a game in 1990 and died of a heart ailment. He was 23.

"My son's memory has become such a strength to so many people," said Lucille Gathers Cheeseboro.

Wrote Bill Plaschke in today's L.A. Times: "In an era of sports cynicism and strife, the saddest, sweetest college basketball story still lives."
