Aaron Schroeder, 84, the songwriter behind the Elvis Presley hit ‘It’s Now or Never,’ died Tuesday in Englewood, N.J., publicist Dale Olson said.

Olson said Schroeder had been suffering from a form of Alzheimer’s disease.

Schroeder wrote several other hits for Presley, including ‘Stuck on You’ and ‘A Big Hunk O’ Love.’

But he was more than just Presley’s songwriter. He was also a producer, and was credited with helping the young careers of acts including Jimi Hendrix and Barry White, and he wrote the theme song for ‘Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!’

Survivors include his wife, Abby, and daughter Rachel.

Update: We have a correction to last night’s AP story. Schroeder was born Sept. 7, 1926, meaning he was 83 when he died. A complete obituary written by Times staffer Dennis McLellan will appear this afternoon at www.latimes.com/obits.
